Whiten your teeth with Oil Pulling!
Since changing jobs, I was without dental insurance and being that I have this heath condition, I needed to seek alternatives to maintain my oral hygiene between appointments. Thus, I decided to try Oil Pulling.
We all have heard the amazing health benefits of coconut oil, but did you know it can also be used as an antiseptic mouthwash?
This 3,000-year-old Ayurvedic practice of swishing a tablespoon of oil (like coconut, sesame or safflower) around your mouth every morning for 20 minutes. Yes, that's right — 20 minutes. The practice is supposed to cleanse your teeth and gums of bacteria.can be an effective oral detoxification procedure that has the potential to kill bad breath, reduce inflammation, strengthen gums, prevent cavities, and naturally whiten teeth! And I have also been told that it can improve metabolism, detoxification, reduces tooth sensitivity/pain and helps clear the sinuses too!
Here's how it works: the coconut oil sticks to the oil in the cell membranes of all the little cells in your mouth, and so when you spit it out, you’re also spitting out all those little guys in there. Science.
Speaking of science:
A new study titled "Effect of coconut oil in plaque-related gingivitis” has proven for the first time the efficacy of oral use of coconut oil for reducing gingivitis related plaque. 60 subjects were measured for plaque and gingival indices at baseline and then on days 1, 7, 15, 30 after starting the oil pulling. The results of the study concluded: “In comparison to the baseline values both the gingival and the plaque indices substantially reduced during the period of assessment. There was a steady decline in both the plaque index and the gingival index values from day 7. The average gingival index score on day 30 was down to 0.401 (from .91 [at baseline]) and the plaque index score was 0.385 (from 1.19 [at baseline])."
Coconut oil is made up of medium-chain triglycerides, most of which is comprised of caprylic and lauric acid. Caprylic and lauric acid are potent antimicrobials, meaning they naturally kill unwanted bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
SO, HOW DO YOU IT??
Take a tablespoon of unrefined virgin coconut oil and place it in your mouth to melt. The team at Reviews.com found that Kelapo Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Dr. Bronner’s Whole Kernal Organic Virgin Coconut Oil to be the “gold standard” brands and containing the highest quality.
As soon as you wake up (before brushing your teeth), swish 1 tablespoon of coconut oil around for 10-15 minutes.
If the taste or texture bothers you, try lemon essential oil for sweetness and an extra pathogen-fighting powder.
Then, spit it out in the trash or toilet. I typically do this in the morning and swish it around while I'm in the shower.
Try it out! It typically takes up to 21 days to see a shade difference in your teeth.
