YTT - Week 4 UPDATE

Week 4 of Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) with Yoga Tree SF - WHOA! I can’t believe it’s already been a month, time really flies when you are having fun! I am so grateful for this Yoga Teacher Training journey with Yoga Tree SF! Every time I go to class, I feel so much excitement, expansiveness, and gratitude with choosing this program as opposed to others. It’s evident that every single one of these teachers care about continuing the legacy of Yoga Teaching in the most humbling and profound way.

This week, we went over topics such as Yoga & Diversity on Friday evening with Gabby Yates as well as Yoga Alignment for both Saturday and Sunday with Jason Bowman.

Yoga & Diversity - What a hot seated topic. Awkward for many but necessary topic of discussion when it comes to diversity and inclusion in the Yoga space. How do you include those into the realm of yoga? Especially when there are already existing constructs for those who are able to do Yoga - it can be dependent on your socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, race, and much more. The list truly keeps going and I really wish we spent more time on this topic and wish the conversation was moderated better.

Yoga Alignment - Alignment is intended to create a stable foundation for a safe practice, to allow the body to open in new ways, and to reduce the risk of injury. My favorite teacher thus far as I appreciate that he brings some lighthearted humor into this stressful portion of YTT. Last week, I had a bit of trouble being tested on the different Surya Namaskars (sun salutations) along with various poses. Our homework for the week was to teach Surya Namaskar A & B (Sun Salutation A & B) along with various poses to friends or anyone really without demonstrating. I found that challenging but became much more confident in my cues afterwards coming into class. PHEW!

We also learned how to do Triangle Pose, Warrior 2, Side Angle Pose, Pyramid Pose and as well as started working on backbends. Did you know that backbends relay a lot on your leg strength? WHOA. Also learned that I’ve been doing wheel pose incorrectly for all my life. Now that I know how to do it, I don’t have much distance but I’ll work up to it. Fascinating world of Yoga Alignment and how to properly respect the traditional practice and art without culturally appropriating.

Our homework was this week was to teach both sun salutations while adding different combinations as well.

Can’t wait to share more of what happens next week.
Until next week, my friends!
